A Thoughtful Faith Book Cover & Interior
A Thoughtful Faith for the 21st Century is a collection of personal essays by Latter-day Saint thinkers who give reason for the spiritual hope that is in them. They include historians and scientists, philosophers and psychologists, political scientists and poets. In the process for creating the cover any interior for this book, we agreed that the imagery of using plant growth correlated with the concept of faith that we wanted to communicate the best. In the Latter-day Saint culture, the phrase "Faith is like a little seed: If planted, it will grow" is widely recognized, due to it being a lyric from a children's hymn. We wanted to lean on that foundational background for the audience that would be reading the book. As we explored how we could use the plant growth imagery, we really liked the metaphor of an individual growing their seed of faith amongst the forest of others doing the same thing. Where often it can feel lonesome for individuals going through their faith journey, this book illustrates that we are experiencing this mortal life together, and can rely on each others differing experiences of faith to strengthen our own. Implementing this idea, we commissioned the artist Jessica Sarah Beach to create our cover illustration, as well as to create custom drop caps, footnote markers and paragraph breaks within the book, all reflecting the idea of growing our seeds of faith together. The text of the book is typeset in William, a modern interpretation of William Casion's historic typeface, crafted by Maria Doreuli to honor tradition while meeting the demands of contemporary design. The writer's names and the footnotes are typset in Söhne, designed by Kris Sowersby and engineered by Noe Blanco.
